TAMPA BREAKWAY FESTIVAL – April 26th-27th
Hall & Oates

Venue: MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre, Tampa, Florida–May 21, 2016

It was a rock and soul evening at Tampa’s MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre when Hall and Oates, Trombone Shorty, and Sharon Jones rolled into town. We had beautiful weather as it was hot and sunny until 8-ish. Everyone seemed to be in a partying or even rowdy mood for some reason—possibly because it was a full moon. I was surprised to see so many Generation X’ers and Baby Boomers high on the sauce.

First up was veteran blues and funk singer Sharon Jones. She came out on fire, wearing a bright red dress, dancing, and belting out music. She was backed by a full band—horn section and all. Next up, was Trombone Shorty bringing his New Orleans-flavored, horn-driven funk band to the house. Rock At Night just saw him at the Sunshine Music & Blues Festival in January and knew he would put on a great show.

Finally, it was dark out and the stage was lit with bright colored lights and a large screen so people on the lawn could see the show clearly. Out came John Oates with guitar in hand wearing his trademark black curls, which are now slightly peppered with gray. Then came Daryl Hall with his long blond locks blowing from what appeared to be an onstage fan. He was wearing colored shades and looking very youthful.

They started out the evening with a bang singing “Maneater” and followed with “Out of Touch”. It was like time-traveling back to 80s FM radio and MTV era. Man! They had so many memorable hits! So Tampa was filled with Philadelphia soul on this full-moon Saturday night as this dynamite duo blared out their hits and a few covers like “Family Man” (they re-recorded the Mike Oldfield hit, making it very popular in the 80s) and “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’”. I’m sure the audience left the concert feeling happy and satisfied!
