Rock At Night had the pleasure of speaking with Jet Baker (lead vocals/piano) of the UK ska band Buster Shuffle.  Although labeled as a “ska” band they really cannot be pigeon-holed as their 4th album I’ll Take What I Want has eclectic influences.  I absolutely love the album which has songs that sound like Madness (“I don’t trust a word you say”) with its thick Cockney accent, honky tonk piano, and vocal harmonies. The song “See You Next Week” has a definite Small Faces tinge (think, “Lazy Sunday”) and “I’ll be in Peckham” creates a wonderful carnival atmosphere with mandolins and accordions into a Parisian feel. Some songs have tubas, others sound reggae, and even like a bouncy polka (“Banana Thief”) but all are fun Fun FUN!! Fans of Gogol Bordello or even ska bands like The Toasters will appreciate the album.

And to Rock At Night readers/listeners in North America, Buster Shuffle will be heading your way in late-Spring!  They will be performing at the Punk Rock Bowling Festival in Las Vegas but Baker noted in the interview the band will be heading up and down the East Coast–and even Florida (it’s hard to contain my excitement hearing this).

In the interview, Jet Baker discusses the stories behind various songs in I‘ll Take What I Want, the upcoming North American tour, and the ska genre.
