Venue: St. Andrews Hall, Detroit-November 24, 2015–Lights
Lights is an electronic music innovator from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Calling the genre “electro-soul”, Lights’ sound has all the addictive qualities of pop music–which gets stuck deep in your brain–while still having an electronic/indie rock/new wave sound. Lights’ lyrics speak on love and life – sometimes from a next dimension perspective–moving forward in the hardest times, and have even referenced video games. Already having an enormous fan base, Lights continues to gain converts to their cult following with each tour and album release year-by-year.
At St. Andrews Hall, Detroit, the audience stirred as the lighting shifted and the interim music became silent. “I love you” was a resounding phrase heard over the screams of the audience to the opening chord of “From All Sides”. The fans of Lights are in love with her and it can be seen heard and felt in every moment she is on the stage. The venue was packed tight against the stage and still filled most of the enormous room. “Detroit is kind of crazy,” says Lights to the admiring crowd with a smile, “but you have to be crazy to enjoy life the most,” she continued, agreeing.
The audience sang along with every song, word for word. Honestly, it felt like the type of crowd response you would get at a very popularized, mainstream show – only the energy was a thousand times more intimate and honest. During the middle of the show, the crowd got a break from screaming and swaying as Lights brought out the acoustic guitar to play older material and audience requests. She then went back into the electronic world and into the crowd, giving them reciprocated love. Her energy seemed to only increase as the show came closer to the end of the set.
Lights and tour mates The Mowglis have a theme of positivity, togetherness, and moving forward in their music. They took the time to share their appreciation and love openly with the audience, acknowledging the events happening in the world and sharing in a moment of hope.
LIGHTS is currently touring with The Mowglis, Phases, and K. Flay (who premiered on the tour on in Detroit and played an amazing set). They continue to spread the love one city after another:
