Review: LANKS + HEIN COOPER

Venue: Rocket Bar, Adelaide, 17th December, 2016

A sharing of friendship, similar music styles and intimate performances has brought LANKS and HEIN COOPER together for a series of shows around Eastern Australia, wrapping up in Adelaide on Saturday night. Both emerging artists have earned popularity through Triple J Unearthed, scoring high rotation plays on our national radio station.

the-art-of-escape-cover-artHEIN COOPER hails from Milton, NSW and is described as an Indie/Pop artist. He performed songs from his recently released debut album, ‘The Art of Escape’. The title track, caught my attention when it was first released, a year and a half ago and has remained on my play list ever since. His use of hypnotic rhythms and repetitive vocal loops are very mesmerizing. He creates a dream-like quality with his uncomplicated vocal/acoustic presentation. ‘Rusty’ is a catchy, more up-beat track which gets you singing along pretty quickly. His strong, yet also delicate vocals become an instrument of their own. His impressive vocal range and varied tone depth are controlled and beautifully balanced. His set came to a close all too quickly, finishing with ‘The Art of Escape’. I look forward to hearing more from him in the future.

viet-rose-cover-artLANKS hails from Melbourne, Victoria and is described as an Alternative/Electronic artist, which is probably why some of his vocals remind me of SAFIA. The songs he performed from his ‘Viet Rose’ EP were very familiar to me. ‘Bitter Leaf’ released this year, is melodic and rhythmic with nice underlying harmonies. ‘Holla’ has received glowing reviews. It features a combination of experimental electronic synth and dreamy vocals, giving it a distinct and unique sound. LANKS was backed up on stage by Justin Olsson on drums and Jess Bonnitcha on synth and vocals, giving a full and rounded sound.

The intimate venue, Rocket Bar, was the perfect location for this collaboration. An enthusiastic audience of all ages danced and sang along. The stage for both acts was dimly lit with flashes of blue and yellow strobes, making for a dramatic effect.

I’m sure we’ll hear a lot more from both these artists. Hein Cooper is performing at both the Lorne and Byron Bay Falls Festivals over New Year, so if you are going to one of these, you’re in for a real treat.
