Venue: Melkweg, Amsterdam, 12th August 2017
From Punk Rock to Reggae, Hip Hop to Ska and Metal to Blues, Slightly Stoopid have an eclectic style that appeals to everyone. This was certainly true last night in Amsterdam’s iconic music venue, Melkweg, where I caught Slightly Stoopid on their umpteenth visit to Amsterdam. The band has been together now for 23 years, pretty much touring on the road for a lot of that time. I first discovered them earlier this year at the Byron Bay Bluesfest in Australia and was very keen to see them again.
Their high energy and crazy antics started from song one, London Dub, from their album ‘Slightly Not Stoned Enough To Eat Breakfast Stoopid’ album. This set the tone for the evening and had everyone moving straight up. They played a generous set including songs from many of their nine albums. Diehard fans sang along and jumped to the music for the full one and three quarter hours.
Front men Kyle and Miles kept swapping guitars (bass and lead) and positions on the stage, proving their versatility and keeping everyone on their toes. Banter between songs was often based on their appreciation of Amsterdam’s offerings and the stage was continuously filled with smoke and haze.
The band is very versatile with a tight horn section, giving a Ska sound to some of their songs. They performed a great cover of Greatful Dead’s Franklin’s Tower and paid homage to Reggae legend, Don Carlos during their encore with Wize Man. Don has featured in this song with Slightly Stoopid, many times.
From here, Slightly Stoopid are heading back to the US for a series of festival appearances, so catch them if you can.
