Venue: The Plaza Live, Orlando, Florida–Epica–The Ultimate Principle Tour
EPICA: The Ultimate Principle Tour at The Plaza Live, in Orlando, Florida, marked a lot of personal firsts. While I have listened to a lot of bands, I have not had the pleasure of going to many concerts aside from smaller venues over the years. This is a concert that will always be ingrained in my memory and I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed myself.
The opening act of the evening was Elantris. This Ohio based band features two singers– Lindsay Victoria Kethsum with her clean and gorgeous vocals paired amazingly with the growling powerhouse, Thomas Ullom. Guitarist Garrett Chetock, bassist John Dobosh and keyboardist Mark Liber joined them on stage, alongside the drummer from Lacuna Coil (Ryan Blake Folden). Sadly the drummer, Erik Liber was unable to play because of an achilles injury. I see a bright future for this band that is still quite new compared to the other bands they performed with—and they easily held their own.
After Elantris finished their set and headed to hand out at the merch table, Insomnium came on stage to rock the house. This Finnish death metal band made quite the impression and it was such an honor to see such a talented band in the States since they don’t tour here often. They had impeccable vocals, great energy and you could tell they have found their flow as a band.
The Italian greats, Lacuna Coil, were next up. Lacuna Coil is celebrating nearly 20 years together and it was so amazing to see what they have created, as a band, within that time. Christina Scabbia and Andrea Ferro commanded that stage and their interaction with the crowd made for such an awesome experience. Every member of the band was on point and impressive in their own right.
Symphonic metal great EPICA closed out the show with powerhouse vocals by Simone Simmons. They are the definition of their genre with a mix of death metal growls, operatic vocals, symphonic keyboards, shredding guitars and double bass in spades.
It was a great night for music in Orlando. Catch The Ultimate Principle Tour if it comes your way!
