Patty Smyth

Rocker chic Patty Smyth and her band Scandal hit the house running Saturday night with a straight up two hour set beginning with their 80’s rock originals. Patty admittedly was a little raspy from a recent cold, but managed to power her way through hits “Beat Of A Heart”, “Loves Got A Line On You”, and crowd favorite “The Warrior”. Her vocals improved and as the night went on, just in time for a beautiful version of her mega hit duet “Sometimes Love Ain’t Enough (sans Don Henley). That song earned her both Grammy and Oscar nominations.

Mixing in to the setlist, was a great cover of “Ode To Billy Joe”, and an odd choice of the Rolling Stones “Paint it Black” that she read the words too, off a sheet as she sang.

Extremely comfortable onstage, Patty spoke to the audience often about everything from the green apples she noshed on all night that soothed her throat, to the fact that her Daughter (who attends college in RI) was in the house. Her husband, tennis bad boy, superstar John McEnroe was a no show, however.

A powerful performer, Smyth gave her all to the point of near exhaustion. Singing part of one song while lying on the stage, she rose to finish while the audience joined her to sing and dance onstage. “I Should Be Laughing” became a heartfelt tribute to the passing of guitarist Keith Mack’s Mother. Keith has been with Patty since the beginning, making him the last remaining original Scandal member.

Closers “Downtown Train” and “River Deep, Mountain High, were perfect choices to showcase both the professional and personable star that has Patty Smyth and Scandal fans craving more!
