By Deb kloeden, Rock At Night Adelaide
Venue: Adelaide UniBar, Adelaide – August 17, 2018
Australian Alt/Rock band Kingswood, have been a little quite on the touring front lately, but all for a good cause. They have been working on new material for their next album, following on from After Hours, Close To Dawn. They kicked off their only Australian tour for 2018 in Adelaide last night to the delight of their ardent fans.
Support bands Pinkish Blu and popular Adelaide band Mane pulled the crowd in early. I saw Mane for the first time earlier this year and found it easy to be seduced by her deep, inviting vocals. She finished her set with the ever-popular ‘Chasing Butterflies’.
Kingswood took the stage blazing all guns with hard-core opener ‘Medusa’ from their 2013 EP Change Of Heart. Alex on lead guitar took advantage of the opportunity to rip straight into it, thrashing both hair and guitar around the stage. Through the course of their set, they covered all their musical bases, revisiting the old, familiar songs that made them famous originally, mainly from After Hours, Close To Dawn and Microscopic Wars.
They also introduced three new songs ‘Hit It Home’, ‘Messed It Up’ and ‘Every Night’, explaining that we were the first to hear these live. ‘Messed It Up’ was one of their more ballad-like songs, declaring regret and acknowledging “missing You”.
The boys had a lot of fun on stage, engaging well with the audience and interacting with many individually. Kingswood are a versatile band, mixing up their instruments and feeding off each other in a genuine show of band togetherness.
This was the second time I have seen Kingswood perform and my amazed memory from the first time was confirmed. Seeing them perform live gives me a whole new appreciation for their music. Their songs came alive with a raw energy, which is infectious and dynamic. The familiar, polished radio edits, (Golden, Creepin) are nothing like the wild, free, live versions. It is as if each band member is liberated from the chains of the expected.
Kingswood have five more shows on this tour, winding up with an already SOLD OUT show in home town Melbourne. Check then out if you can.
