Rock At Night will be covering the BALOISE SESSION 2018 from 19 October to 6 November.

It’s always magic to discover this great Swiss Festival programme over the years. But for this 2018 edition, the BALOISE SESSION – Beatrice Stirnimann and her team- just reached the top!!
This year we’ll have the great opportunity to see JOHN LEGEND, “THE” legendary BUDDY GUY, Ms. LAURYN HILL and other amazing acts hit the stage of the BALOISE SESSION.
Over ten concert evenings, stars and newcomers will be performing pop, rock, hip-hop, blues and world music in the famous intimate Basel venue.

An evening with….

John Legend

JOHN LEGEND

The American singer, songwriter and actor worked as a studio musician and as a backing vocals for Alicia Keys, «You Don’t Know My Name» and on «The Boogie That B» by the Black Eyed Peas. He played piano on Lauryn Hill’s “Everything Is Everything” and collaborated with many other established artists. Legend will be performing two evenings. His first concert will be supported by the flautist and songwriter Alina Amuri (from the Congo, now resident in Zurich).  The soul singer Nicole Bernegger,  the «Voice of Switzerland» winner will open on the second evening.

BEN HARPER & THE INNOCENT CRIMINALS

Ben Harper, North American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalis began to play guitar as a child and grew up with his mother’s family. In 2014 Ben & Ellen Harper, his mother, performed in NYC with their first collaborative album “Childhood Home”. In 2015, he reunited his band The Innocent Criminals after seven years off. The band has experienced an eclectic mix of blues, folk, soul, reggae and rock music. They released the album “Call It What It Is“ in 2016. Ben Harper’s latest album, together with Charlie Musselwhite “No Mercy in This Land” was released last spring.

RAD. TRIO FEAT. CANDY DULFER

Jimmy Cliff was announced on the same evening. Unfortunately due to an accident he won’t be able to participate. We all wish him a swift recovery.

RAD.Trio Feat. Candy Dulfer

On a very short notice, RAD. Trio feat. Candy Dulfer will now open the evening. Rose Ann Dimalanta, RAD., is a Californian keyboarder and Candy Dulfer a Dutch saxophonist. They both have worked closely with the legendary PRINCE and his band, the New Power Generation, for his Musicology tours in 2003 and 2004. Together with bass player Raymond McKinley and drummer Massimo Buonanno, RAD. is a top-class trio. Candy Dulfer will be the Trio’s special guest at the Baloise Session show

Buddy Guy – last album cover

What an honor to know the legendary Buddy Guy will be performing at the Baloise Session 2018 edition! The American Blues guitarist and singer, known for his Chicago Blues style, influenced many guitarists like Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jeff Beck and John Mayer. In the sixties, Buddy Guy played with Muddy Waters as a session guitarist at Chess Records and began a musical partnership with the harmonica player Junior Wells (in concert in Basel in 1987!). It’s during the blues revival of the late 1980s and early 1990s that Buddy Guy’s career took off. His latest album title says it all “The Blues is Alive and Well”.

BETH HART

Beth Hart

The brilliant American singer, songwriter and musician from Los Angeles will perform at the Baloise Session for the second time, for the pleasure of the first and the new fans. Known for her raw and powerful blues-rock sound, she collaborated with Slash, Jeff Beck, and released 3 cover albums in collaboration with Joe Bonamassa, the last one “Black Coffee” was released this year. Beth Hart also collaborated to Buddy Guy’s album “ Rhythm & Blues” (2013), recording “What You Gonna Do About Me” with him. An awesome duet! Can we hope to see them perform together on this exceptional Baloise Session evening ?….A few more weeks before finding out….

TRIBALISTAS

Tribalistas

Tribalistas is a Brazilian musical supergroup with Arnaldo Antunes (ex-Titãs), Marisa Monte and Carlinhos Brown (Timbalada). The popular album “Tribalistas” was released in Brazil in late 2002 and the band reunited for a second “Tribalistas”album, released in August 2017 with Universal Music. The Tribalistas first-ever tour will undoubtedly cross the BALOISE SESSION. They represent the best of the Música Popular Brasileira, we’re looking forward to dancing on the warm Brazilian rhythms!

MARIA GADÚ

Maria Gadú

It will be the Brazilian singer, songwriter and guitarist who will open this festive evening. Her first album from 2009, self-titled Maria Gadú, was followed by 6 others , the latest “Guelã Ao Vivo” was released in 2016. Maria Gadú gained renown playing “Ne me quitte pas” by Jacques Brel for Jayme Monjardim, a Brazilian TV and film director.

Ms. LAURYN HILL

Ms. Lauren Hill

Ms. Lauryn Hill is a true icon. First known as a member of “The Fugees” and the enormous success of the band’s album “The Score”, the American singer and rapper followed a successful solo career, through a few months reunion with her ex-band end 2004. This year will celebrate the 20th anniversary of her classic album «The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill», one of the best of the 90’s. The event led to a tour of the same name. Ms Lauryn Hill will start her European shows at the Baloise Session on November 5.
The evening will open with the very talented musician from the beautiful Swiss region of Appenzell: Marius Bear.

WALKING ON CARS

Walking on Cars are a five-piece Irish alternative rock band. The 5 members are school friends and started performing at local venues in 2010.

Following the international success of the single “Speeding Cars” 5 years later, the band released their debut album “Everything This Way”early 2016 and reached the top of the charts in Ireland.

Rock At Night was already present at LP’s concert last year for the Music & Wine festival in Colmar. Seeing her again on stage promises to be another magic Baloise Session night. The American singer is also a famous songwriter. She wrote for many big artists for years before starting her solo career.

She released her album “Lost on You” in 2016, and the single of the same name topped the charts of twelve countries.
Coming from both sides of the Atlantic, the Irish WALKING ON CARS and the American LP will close this amazing festival on November 6.
