The Hogan McLaughlin Spring/Summer 2020 New York Fashion Week runway show danced ever so delicately on a fine line between sophisticated post-apocalyptic royalty and goth-chic punk. The cutting-edge designer has been building an army of cult followers not to mention the well-known music artists and entertainers who have embellished themselves in his finest pieces. In 2011 the designer collaborated with heiress muse, fashion icon, and music artist Daphne Guinness on his first garments later dressing entertainers such as Lady Gaga and Shirley Manson of Garbage.
His latest collection Solanaceae takes inspiration from the psychedelic 1973 animated feature Belladonna of Sadness. The garments are created out of silk faille, georgette, and leather tailored to have the paper-like quality of hand drawn animation. His collection was further enhanced by artist Bill Crisafi’s hallucinatory floral illustrations. Hogan payed homage to deadly plants like the nightshade and transformed them into mythical living creatures in soft pastels. To top off his delicate yet edgy collection he accessorized every model with a pair of Dr. Martens boots.
Hogan McLaughlin proves that he can turn the macabre into something romantically beautiful. His designs always seem to have undertones of musical inspiration and it is very clear that for his latest collection, music and fashion came once again, hand-in-hand. Besides rocking out fashion collections, Hogan is also an illustrator who has created promotional images for TV shows such as Game of Thrones, Penny Dreadful, and Vikings.
