By Chyrisse Tabone, Rock At Night
Venue: The Fillmore, Detroit-October 6, 2019
Rock At Night has always had a penchant for classic rock bands—and Millennial bands that have that dirty, sexy, rock sound. You’ll find us following bands large and small between the UK, EU, and US such as Blackberry Smoke, Magpie Salute, Greta Van Fleet, rumHoney, Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown, and many more that have the “it” sound. Now, our new favorite band is Dirty Honey, a Los Angeles band which released a must-hear self-titled EP which will give you faith that classic-sounding rock music is here to stay! The single “When I’m Gone” is taking the internet by storm with millions of streams and is being heard on national radio stations nationwide in the U.S.
It was just a couple of years ago that Dirty Honey came to fruition and has racked up an impressive resume, touring with the likes of Slash, opening for The Who and Guns N Roses, and not to mention, playing at a slew of summer festivals such as Welcome to Rockville, Rocklahoma, and Sonic Temple. Recently, Rock At Night had the pleasure of speaking with Dirty Honey’s guitarist John Notto. You can find the interview HERE.
Dirty Honey is currently on tour with Alter Bridge and Skillet, and Rock At Night caught up with the band in Detroit on October 6, 2019. The Fillmore was rocking the hive as Dirty Honey came out on stage in the Motor City with all pistons firing. The historic Renaissance-themed venue, which was recently restored to its1925 splendor, was packed from the floor to the balcony, way before the doors opened, clearly waiting to see the opening band. I even noticed many Dirty Honey t-shirts proudly on display.
Finally, at 7 p.m., this blues-rock band kicked ass and took names, as the crowd welcomed the band with cheers and whistles. Marc Labelle, wearing his signature black hat, and carrying the mic stand across the stage, belted out “Scars”, as guitarist John Notto and bassist Justin Smolian, pranced and strutted, waving their long locks. Corey Coverstone, possibly the glue of the band, pounded the drums with gusto, tying their signature classic rock sound together.
By the time “Heartbreaker” was played, the band truly had the audience in the palm of their hand! Other highlights were their massively popular single “When I’m Gone” and finally, “Rolling 7s”, as Dirty Honey turned out to be not just an opening band, but clearly a much anticipated performance. As I wandered into the lobby, as Alter Bridge was playing their set, there was a long line of fans at the Dirty Honey merch table, many posing with the bands for photographs and grabbing signatures on albums and t-shirts. The response was overwhelming! Clearly, Dirty Honey grabbed a bunch of new converts to the hive in the Motor City, which has a long-standing love of classic rockers.
