By Michael Dinger, Rock At Night New York City
Venue: (le) Poisson Rouge, New York City, NY- THE BRKN “Dangerous Summer Tour”-November 20, 2019
I’ll tell you what’s happening. The BRKN is a quartet lineup hailing from Denver, Colorado, comprised of founding member Jacob Cade (vox, guitar), Kick Stevens (guitar), Mike Bokenkamp (drums) and Tristan Verghese (bass). With only a handful of dates left on their 17-city tour in support of The Dangerous Summer, The BRKN brought their explosive live act to (le) Poisson Rouge in New York City this past Wednesday night.
After taking the stage with little fanfare and a sparse crowd milling about, it was quickly apparent that these rock n’ punk newcomers were not to be discounted. The BRKN performed blistering versions of songs from their independent debut EP, to be unleashed in early-2020. The title of this record, No. 3, is Cade’s homage to his grandfather who wore the same number during his soccer playing days in Mexico, and a number that represents a self-proclaimed symbol of his heritage.
While their set progressed, and The BRKN holding nothing back, I could sense a connection between the growing crowd and the band. The sheer energy of Cade’s stage persona and shredding guitar was intoxicating, mixing an old school rock vibe with a surprisingly unique style. Song performance highlights from the evening included their anthemic “Your Existence,” and the hypnotically melodic “The Motions.”
Additional songs performed by The BRKN, who looked and sounded like they had been playing together for years (rather the months), included “The Only Ones Left,” the gritty “Broke,” “Haven’t Found Me Yet” and “Rollin’ With The Punches.” Over the next few months, be on the lookout for new songs and accompanying videos from The BRKN, and hopefully more touring!
