By Mike McKenney, Rock At Night New England
Venue: Greenwich Odeum, East Greenwich, Rhode Island–January 16, 2020-Everclear with Chapell
‘Who knew Rhode Island rocks out this hard on a Thursday night?’, Everclear’s lead singer, Art Alexakis prodded the crowd that packed the Odeum. The response from the audience was loud and clear. they came out to party.
Beginning the night was one of live music’s best kept secrets, opener Alan Chapell. Although he has played to audiences around the world, Chapell is now being recognized here in the U.S. by fans of his unique, sometimes quirky style. “Ride” a song from his “Penultimate” LP is a perfect display of the depth and maturity of his songwriting skills, being both dark and optimistic, his meaningful lyrics are coupled with rich vocals. “The Radio” stands out as a fun and upbeat with inviting lyrics that make everyone sing along. Hearing Chapell for the first time is like uncovering a treasure you didn’t even know existed. He is must see for 2020!
From the moment Everclear took the stage, the crowd was on their feet, dancing in the aisles, and singing along with every word. The energy Everclear brings is still stratospheric. Alexakis (vocals, guitar) along with shredder Davey French (guitar, vocals), bassist Freddy Herrera, and drummer Brian Nolan hit the mark with a great performance of fan favorites, “Father Of Mine”, “Volvo Driving Soccer Mom”, and “Everything To Everyone”.
By the time they got to their biggest hit “Santa Monica”, the band and the crowd had become one. While there were times during Everclear’s history when touring seemed to overwhelm the music, At The Odeum, Everclear was having a great time onstage and their loud and enthusiastic style was well received by their insatiable audience.
Everclear is fun, high energy, great music, any night of the week!
