Album Review: Collateral-Collateral-Released by Roulette Media on February 21, 2010
In December 2018, Rock At Night reviewed Collateral’s EP 4 Shots!, which featured the hit single “Midnight Queen.” Well, the British four-piece band hailing from Ramsgate, released a full-fledged album Collateral on February 2, 2020 which is chock full of rock ‘n’ roll stew! The 9-song track will appeal to fans of 80s rock with catchy choruses and lead guitar solos but also fans of Southern Rock–there’s something for everybody, as Collateral appears to have experimented with different styles.
“Mr. Big Shot” and “Lullaby” hearken the fun 80s with almost a Def Leppard feel. “Promiseland” and “In It For Love” are hard-driving rock ‘n’ roll with melodic vocals and sing-along choruses. Collateral’s single “Merry Go Round” definitely captures the 80s feel, making me want to tease my hair and spike it with gel.
“Midnight Queen” and “About This Boy” take on a softer, country-tinged sound, but really appeal to me. Every album needs a love ballad and “Get Back to You” fits the bill with an 80s Aerosmith feel. Another song “Won’t Stop Me Dreaming” is reminiscent of John Waite, with its melody and harmonies.
Each song on Collateral’s album satisfies one’s taste for the “new wave” of classic rock sound which Millennials are rediscovering. The sound of good 80s influenced rock music with real vocals and lead guitar solos never gets old!
