By Mike McKenney, Rock At Night New England
Venue: Greenwich Odeum, East Greenwich, Rhode Island–Marc Cohn with support by Mark Erelli–February 13, 2019
Singer-songwriter Marc Cohn brought his soulful sound and entertained a sold out Greenwich Odeum Thursday night. Mark Erelli started the evening off with his originals “A Little Kindness” and “Blindsided”. The talented Erelli performed with an easy style, bantering with the crowd between songs. From the applause it was obvious audience loved his set. Mark had a full night as he also reappeared as lead guitarist for Marc Cohn’s set.
When Marc Cohn takes the stage, his presence commands attention. One of the great songwriters, Cohn’s personality and life experiences shine through in his songs. Listening to him perform “Silver Thunderbird” invokes images of his Father “The man with the plan and the pocket comb” driving off to work everyday. Cohn’s sound is a soulful blend of, American rhythm and blues and gospel, his smokey vocals that play in his low register are full and rich. With a sense of humor, Cohn introduced his spiritual “Work To Do” (originally recorded with The Blind Boys Of Alabama) by joking The Blind Boys were not there but he had three caucasians to fill in for them.
“Listening For Levon” and “Healing Hands” were crowd favorites but it was his Grammy winning soulful ballad “Walking in Memphis” that everyone came to hear. On their feet from the first note, the audience sang their parts taking their cue from Cohn, “Walking In Memphis” is just as popular today as it was 29 years ago when it put Marc Cohn on everyone’s radar.
A great night of entertaining, easy on the ears music, both Mark Erelli and Marc Cohn are a pleasure to experience.
