Graystation

How long has Graystation been together?

We’ve been a band for around 2 years. We formed during the first covid.

How did you come up with the name Graystation?

Tyler: Coming up with the name was a pretty long process. I remember that I came up with the name ‘Gray Matter’ at first, but it wasn’t quite it. Shortly after, Ryan had the revelation of Graystation while he was at his friend’s house.

How did you guys first get into music?

Tyler: I have a lot of answers for this question, but I’ll try to narrow it down. My absolute EARLIEST memory of making music was at my uncle’s studio in his closet. He would have me over and let me record songs in there. I was probably around 7 years old.

Mason: Well, if you really want to go back, it’s when my mom put me in piano lessons at 11. But I didn’t start making original music until I was 14. Tyler and I would do covers and write songs together from a very young age.

Ryan: I liked listening to it and I liked discovering new genres.

Vince: I started playing bass at 8. What got me into making music was going to EDM shows.

 What/who inspires you?

Tyler: The songs are about love, death, and being human. A lot of my earlier work was a lot more morbid and inspired by Elliot Smith and Connor Oberst. Since then, my influences and sound changed so much. My own personal life experience also plays a big role. I want to tell a story of togetherness, without shying away from tragedy and hardship.

Mason: Frank Ocean for sure, Kanye, Bon Iver, Fleetwood Mac. For drumming, I take influence from BADBADNOTGOOD for their soft, loose style.

Ryan: Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, Victor Wooten

Vince: There are too many bands influences to count, but the drive is to make other people feel how I feel listening to my favorite artists!

What’s your favorite song to perform and why?

Tyler: “Jamesong” is my favorite and least favorite to perform. I feel like that song really brings out an emotional performance at the cost of making me sad.

Mason: “Ghost” because of how much energy is in the song.

Ryan: “Ghost”

Vince: Ghost because it’s a fun one

Any artist/bands you would love to perform with in the future?

Tyler: I’d love to perform with Omar Apollo. He is getting really popular without a label, which I think is cool.

Mason: Turnstile

Ryan: The Black keys

Vince: Arctic Monkeys or Cage the Elephant

NEW SINGLE “TIMELINE”

Tyler: This song is about me questioning mortality. I wanted time to slow down a little bit. It’s also about taking a minute to appreciate how beautiful our surroundings are. We are only here on Earth for a brief period, so let’s appreciate it. The song consists of an arpeggiated electric guitar, consistent like a clock. It’s accompanied by a comforting baseline and some twinkly triads that remind me of stars. All of this set to a steady, solid drum track. “Timeline” was primarily recorded in the basement of our bassist Ryan’s house, and then taken by one of our guitarists Vince, where he did his nerdy engineering to get it ready to release.

MY REVIEW

Graystation’s new song “Timeline” is a lot different compared to their first single “Lover Girl”, a song I would recommend sending your crush or getting it on to. “Timeline” to me is an easy-listening song with deep lyrics that really make you question and reflect on life…

Opening lyrics…

“The world is spinning too fast, why don’t we wait a minute?”

This is something I think of quite often, the fear of missing out, grief & loss, and death in general. After loosing people close to me, I have a different outlook on the way I look at world (good and bad). But going through these difficult times made me realize that life is so short..

so keep moving forward!

do what makes you happy!

spend time with loved ones! (or don’t if they piss you off)

listen to Graystation!

and continue to support the local music scene in Michigan!

“TIMELINE” AVAILABLE ON SPOTIFY AND APPLE MUSIC FEBUARY 19th, 2022.

Tyler: This is our first music video. I’m really excited to make it. We’ve been expanding our collaborative circle lately, so we’re getting a lot of new hands on this project. I don’t know what to expect of it so far, it’s very early in the creation process. Filming in the snow has been a nightmare, but we’re Michiganders so we’ll get it done.
