Review: 7Descent single “Ooh Child” – Release Date January 19, 2022
Nashville’s very own 7Descent have released a cover of “O-o-h Child”, the 1970 classic song by The Five Stairsteps. The integrative rock/soul band pulls away from Chicago Soul and gives us a rock focused twist on this hit. While keeping the use of the present trumpet opening, 7Descent amplifies their rock sound by making the drumline heavier and using a hefty electric guitar as the rhythmic pulse. The vocals shift from silky smooth to a more honest grit, but adds the use of falsetto harmonies to pay tribute to the song’s soul roots. 7Descent is Ed Taylor on guitar, Ishmael Herring on lead vocals, Andrew Cremmins on drums, and Brian Coffey on bass.
“O-o-h Child” was inspired by the tragic passing of 7Descent’s founding member Ed Taylor’s parents to Covid-19 less than 24 hrs apart in March of 2021. He found solace in the lyrics and brought it to the table. It is a reminder to those who have experienced loss of any kind that there is hope in times of despair.
