Review: 1st Base Runner’s single “Near Me” – Release date January 28, 2022
Austin Texas artist Tim Husmann, aka 1st Base Runner has been making some serious waves throughout 2021. Husmann started out as a support musician for a number of big name artists playing drums, synths and arranging electronic live setups. Deciding to start workin on music of his own, he took a seven-year hiatus and came up with the aptly-named album ‘Seven Years of Silence’.
The album created some serious interest, provoking Universal Music to pair him with legendary film director Matt Mahurin (Tom Waits, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden) for two videos from the album, of which “Break Even” became an official selection for the 2022 Berlin Lift-Off Film Festival.
Husmann followed with the ‘Ellis’ EP in late 2021, and now comes another double video package off that EP in ‘Man Overboard” and “Near Me.”
The latter is certainly one of the most impressive tracks on ‘Ellis,’ and covers probably all the key traits of Husmann’s music as 1st Base Runner – psych-tinged post rock as a cross between Radiohead and Godspeed! You Black Emperor, all channelled through Husmann’s excellent electronic capabilities and strong vocals.
An excellent introduction to an artist that seems on the verge of making it big.
