New York based alt-band, The Dionysus Effect have just released the single, “Stars” as part of the promotional process for their fast-approaching debut album. Featuring authors Christoph Paul (bass, vocals) and Brett Peterson (drums) along with SAG actor Sean Quinn Hanley (guitar), the group came together during 2020, and are not just the latest in a long line of bands who are set to keep rock and roll alive, but a group who wish to use the medium of music to convey the message of “truly [living] and [enjoying] the highs and [finding] purpose and resilience with the lows.” Given the passion on display in “Stars,” it seems like they’re on the right track to spread this message to the masses.
Rock at Night Says: Taking a cue from early U2, The Dionysus Effect deliver a post-punk vibe driven by Christoph Paul’s warm vocals, thick bass tones, and the emotive guitar stylings of Sean Quinn Hanley whose lead line bears a striking resemblance to the searing “New Year’s Day.” Instead of copying the Edge’s incessant chime, however, Hanley utilizes a dirtier guitar tone filled with fuzz and squeal. This is amplified during the solo where the liberal use of feedback and compression create a thing of beauty. This isn’t just needless noise or a basic repetition of the riff, but a nasty piece of work that emulates the unhinged pyrotechnics of the metal gods of old. That’s right, this blitzed out slice of alt-rock sees the lead guitarist run his fingers along the neck of the guitar and shred like there’s no tomorrow. Despite the display of technical ability, this still feels loose and spontaneous, as though it was improvised on the spot. A very fitting track to start out on, and one that fully encompasses the ecstasy implied by the band’s name. Watch the equally creative video below!
