Review: Doug Henthorn’s Three-May 6, 2022
As a guitarist/vocalist, you just don’t get to play with the likes of Joe Bonamassa, John Hiatt, Jason Bonham and Beth Hart. Indiana resident Doug Henthorn did. And Three, his latest solo album shows why.
Actually, Henthorn fronted now defunct Healing Sixes (2000-14) with who he released three albums that featured both Jason Bonham and Joe Bonamassa. After he released his first solo album Cold Medicine in 2016, Henthorn encountered health issues and as he puts it, found himself contemplating end of life scenarios, but he pulled out, recorded another album (‘LLC’), coming back now in full force.
The title of his latest album may imply simplicity, but is an album of soulful, emotional, rock that ranges from explosive blues rock to countrified soul of originals like Tom Petty-like of the opener “Set Them Up, Throw Em Back, Knock Them Down,” Dire Straits-inspired “Fate of None” or full-on rocker of “Forewarned and Falling” to incredible covers of “Drive” and “Across the Universe.”
It is all done with incredible musicianship of Henthorn’s band (Tim Fuller: Bass Travis Feaster: Guitars, Troye Kinnett: Keys, Brian Yarde, Devon Ashley, Wade Parish: Drums), and particularly Henthorn’s excellent vocals and guitars.
Sure, Henthorn travels the rock, blues and soul roads many have taken before, but his engine is a sleek and well-oiled one that can warm the heart of any true rock fan.
