Review: Deaf Lingo’s album Lingonberry via LövelyRecords-Release date April 29, 2022
Somethin’ good is cooking around here! Possibly, this is a motto we can attach to the Italian power pop/post-punk/whatever quartet Deaf Lingo and their second album Lingonberry.
After all, Sandro Specchia – Guitars, Vocals, Yuri Ferrari – Guitars, Gabriele Zaramella – Bass, and Mauro Ronchi – Drums, who comprise the band rented their first practice space in a basement of a pizza and kebab place in Milan, Italy.
While Italy is often renowned for quite a number of high-quality prog rock bands, Deaf Lingo have decided to take another musical route. They go for their own take of all forms of energetic guitar-oriented rock – from post-punk to power pop and hard rock thrown in here and there for good measure. Oh, let us not forget some good, strong dual vocals to boot.
The themes they take on? Alienation, separation, and apathy, but with an approach that is full of passion and energy, as if they wont to exorcise those ‘devils’ as fast as it is humanely possible.
And they are actually doing quite a good job of it. From the opener “Release,” through “Friends” to the closing title track, Speccia and the rest of the band never ease the energy level, but garnish it with enough good melody to make it palpable even for those listeners that rarely opt for post-punk or power pop.
Maye the trick lies in that pizza and kebab they could easily pick upstairs from their basement headquarters.
