WHY SUICIDE PREVENTION AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH IS IMPORTANT TO ME

I lost a portion of my friends I grew up with due to mental illness/addiction over the past ten years but more so the past two years… heroin isn’t the same as it was in ’08 and now full of fentanyl and the pandemic made some people feel even more alone. I always say that “music saves” and it does to some extent, especially when you can relate to the lyrics (they finally make you feel understood and heard), but people also need the resources… and you don’t necessarily need to be in a crisis to be aware of what help Detroit has to offer when it comes to mental health and suicide prevention.

I WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW THEY ARE NOT ALONE

I WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW THE RESOURCES AVAILABLE

I WANT PEOPLE TO LOOK AT MUSIC AND ART WITH A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE

Music has helped me out of many dark periods of my life, and in a lot of ways can be considered my very own version of the 12th step- introducing others to music that has helped me in the past… now with the appropriate resources included.

WHAT IS SIX FT OVER?

Six Feet Over (SFO) is a Detroit based nonprofit that serves the entire state of Michigan. SFO was unofficially formed in September of 2012, LLC’d in 2013 and we got our 501c3 in 2014. We have two programs, Suck It! Suicide (SIS) that serves as our community outreach and Lemon Aid (LA) which is our suicide loss survivor support. Both were formed due to lacking supports for communities. SIS because there was not a presence in the music and art communities at the time of formation around mental health and suicide prevention, or if there was one it was very clinical and not relatable or seen as trustworthy to those in these communities. The Lemon Aid services were formed because I experienced suicide loss and didn’t have the emotional support to hold my hand through what to expect, to talk about my loss openly, and had to raise funds for many of my 9 losses services or their families. People just deserve more and better.

HOW DID YOU START GETTING INVOLVED IN SUICIDE PREVENTION AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH?

I lost my mom to suicide in November 2003 and have lost 8 friends since then. It took seven years before I was comfortable telling people my mom died by suicide, not because I wasn’t comfortable but because I always felt like I had to make others feel better about my loss. I then started to realize how many of my friends were struggling with mental health concerns, or opened up about previous attempts, or their own losses and saw they didn’t get the support they deserved. The community didn’t have the language to talk with each other about it, or if they did the person they opened up to didn’t have the tools to know how to help. I still have issues with childhood trauma from living with a parent who was suicidal and who’s mental health was not good, I have panic and anxiety disorders, and I love a great many people who are chronically suicidal. The systems we have right now are not built to the standards they should be. Most take agency away and criminalize mental health concerns and suicidality, when what we need is to help people have a life worth living. A life with connection, purpose, and power. Basically, I’m a survivor of loss who struggles with mental health and has been supported by the music and art community through it all and want all the people who need help to have it by paying it forward.
