Review: Dakota 66 – If Not Now, When – Release date June 9, 2023
How do you craft some melody-oriented indie rock that has substance in the era when the audience still remembers what R.E.M. have done and Radiohead (still) and The National practically rule the terrain?
Dublin, Ireland’s Dakota 66 (J. Gallagher vocals, Brian Grace guitar, Brian Curran bass, and Thomas Leonard, drums) try to answer that question with their debut album ‘If Not Now, When.’
Quite a pertinent question, after all, and this quartet try to answer it with some well-crafted, detailed songs that rely on good melody patterns, playing and singing that definitely go beyond some other debut albums.
But, then, Dakota 66 have been around for some 10 years now and only decided to come up with their first after they were sure that they have something substantive to say musically, and it shows throughout the albums 11 well-crafted songs.
Maybe the next time around they will decide to stick to the motto of this album come up with something in a quicker succession, they definitely have something to say musically.
