Review: Grave Saddles – There You Ain’t -Release date: May 25, 2023

Listening to the three-song EP by California’s quartet Grave Saddles – Chris (he/him), Cameron (they/them), Patrick (they/them), Audrey (they/she), you realize why there is a good crossing point between noisy, melody-oriented bands like Dinosaur Jr. and Replacements and alt-country artists like Townes Van Zandt. After all, at their heyday, that was exactly the road taken by cult favorites like The Meat Puppets.

Grave Saddles take that exact same road here, and they seem to ride it (with or without saddles) quite effectively here. ‘Edible Arrangements’ is all melody and noise that gel, ‘Pony Up’ is like The Replacements ramshackle on a country road and ‘Willie Nelson Golfing Dream #3’ speaks for itself, as it sounds like the combination of the two, the one that works, actually.

Be on the serious lookout for what these guys come up with next.
