Very often, it is hard to draw a straight line between shoegaze and dream pop. After all, neither did the artists that originated these sounds want to, nor do the ones that still delve into these two genres.
And why should they, if they sound good. That is exactly the road Phoenix Arizona duo MRCH (Mickey and Jesse Pangburn) take with their latest single ‘Stars Align.’
Wait, didn’t they only recently come out with the same single? The surely did, but with the two versions the duo shows where dream pop and shoegaze match and differ.
While the original has some pace and pronounced guitar sound, like any great shoegaze song should, the follow up, also dubbed slow version, gives accent to Mickey’s vocals and her partner/bandmate Jesse ( in the video bass played by their member Billy Rose) the specific dream pop touches the duo were after.
So, which version is better? Both.
