Review: Generifus – Rearrangel – Release date June 2, 2023
There is something of a grey are (not in a bad sense, anyway) between rock and Americana, something so well done by the likes of say The Allman Brothers Band and later on The Meat Puppets, where intricate guitar and (often) vocal harmonies dominate the sound. Great one, but often the reason many artist shy away from it is being able to do it, and actually, having the right feel for it.
Listening to ‘Rearrangel,’ the new offering from Generifus, the longstanding music project of Olympia, WA resident Spencer Sult and friends, you can get that same feeling.
The album’s ten tracks cover that wide ground between The Allmans, Meat Puppets and musical touches upon artist like Neko Case, Bonnie Prince BIlly or even Mega Bog.
After a period of songwriting dormancy, Sult started putting new ideas together in the beginning of 2022, resulting in a few dozen demos written over the winter months. The album was recorded in June 2022 in Portland, OR with longtime friends and collaborators Zach Burba (Zacy’s, Dear Nora, Mega Bog) acting as producer and Vin Christopher (Oh, Rose, Ancient Pools) as engineer. Live band members Wilson Caicedo, Andrew Dorsett and Henry Wilson were joined by several Portland musicians to play on the tracks.
The music has that easy flowing, but often complex sound that unveils new delights as you keep on playing it. A great addition for all Americana/rock fans.
