Review: Perfect Angel at Heaven – Imploded – Release date: August 11, 2023

With so many artist covering a wide number of genres, often crossing from one to another (or more), it can be so refreshing to hear a band working within that ‘good (and not so) old’ indie, guitar-based rock.

You can easily fit into that category the Indianapolis band Perfect Angel At Heaven and their latest 5-song EP ‘Imploded.’ This trio consists of Casey Noonan (vocals/guitar), Alex Grove (vocals/bass), and Daniel Thacker (drums), where Noonan has been a longtime fixture of the Indiana music scene.

He previously performed throughout the Midwest and East Coast with the noise rock band Spandrels from 2011 to 2019. In the wake of Spandrels’ breakup, Noonan began writing new songs in 2020 that would eventually lead to the birth of Perfect Angel at Heaven, taking the name from a joke riffing on dating app profiles. Noonan enlisted Grove to join him on bass and vocals, with Thacker later joining the project to round out the lineup on drums.

Actually, Imploder’ is their second release in 2023, while their first release, the elegantly titled ‘EP’, arrived in January 2023.

Seemingly, there is nothing fancy about what PAAH do here, but with such ‘simple’ things it has to be practically perfect, and Noonan and co. do just that here, with some shifting melodies, good vocals and excellent guitar work. Often that will do just fine, thank you.
