“Tampa” Earl Burton
Review: Silent Skies’ single “Construct” – July 13, 2023
If you are seeking something that is a bit off the beaten path, then the newest track from the Scandinavian band Silent Skies will be worth checking out. The duo of Evergrey’s Tom S. Englund and pianist Vikram Shankar have delivered “Construct” ahead of the release of their album Dormant on September 1. With “Construct,” Silent Skies has produced an ethereal, haunting tune that blends the vocal stylings of Englund and the musicianship of Shankar fabulously.
The tune starts with the mystifying keyboard work of Shankar before bringing in Englund’s lyrical examination of life and its destinations. Between the two talents, they get the story of “Construct” across, and it continually adds layers as the song the deeper that you go into the tune. A buildup of three minutes leads to the final triumphant payoff, where the song climaxes with the full band joining in with Englund and Shankar to conclude the song.

No, it is not the usual “in your face” styling that you would expect one of the artists from the Napalm Records roster to have. But it provides what everyone says they want when it comes to listening to music – something different. I will certainly be looking forward to seeing what Silent Skies has once they release Dormant in September (the third release for the band following 2020’s Satellites and 2022’s Nectar) because they have certainly caught my attention with “Construct.”
