Review: Chandra – “Smile”-Release date: October 27, 2023
Making rock that has deep melodic overtones and earning that other tag, pop is not so easy as many might think, particularly if you need to attract the attention of many listeners, say, 30 thousand or so on streaming services.
But that is exactly what Bristol UK, singer-songwriter Chandra has been doing recently, and his latest single ‘Smile’ is proof in the pudding as that saying goes. It is unabashed pop rock with melody at the forefront and guitars leading the instruments with Chandra not forgetting to pay attention to vocals and lyrics either. A sure way to make those streams coming.
And he is quite upfront about his inspirations “Growing up my parents’ record player always had Bowie, The Beatles, The Carpenters on loop. I grew up learning what a great melody was. My teenage years were rocket-fuelled along by Suede, Blur, Oasis, Manics, Supergrass, Elastica, Mansun, Radiohead, Coldplay… but it was REM’s 1995 Monster Tour at Milton Keynes Bowl that lit the spark before all that. From then on I knew that all I wanted to do was perform my own songs live to thousands of people.”
It works for him and for his ever-growing audience.
