Review: Billy Tibbals ‘ EP Night Life Stories-Release date: April 26, 2024
Ok, so 22-year old Billy Tibbals is one of those younger guys who is so inspired (and infatuated with the best of seventies power pop. He already showed that with his aptly titled debut album ‘StayTeenage’ from 2023, and he is proving that with his new 6-track EP ‘Nightlife Stories.’
Anything wrong with that? Absolutely not, if it is any good, and Tibbals shows that he has put his inspirations – the power pop side of prime glam rockers like T. Rex, Bowie at the time, combined with a hefty dose of Cheap Trick – at best use.
It is bopping, shiny rock (in any shape and form, played, sang and produced (by Chris Robinson of Black Crowes) exactly as such music should be, without a single misstep in sight.
As Tibbals puts it, “I wanted it to be a more fast-paced, lively, more raucous album than the previous one, which was quite sweet, really,” says Tibbals. “I wanted to make something a little more aggressive. It’s called Nightlife Stories, and so it’s about seedy creatures of the night.”
And as the seasons change and you start driving around with your car windows down, this just might be a perfect soundtrack for such drives.
