NEW STUDIO ALBUM SOUTH OF HERE OUT JUNE 28 VIA STAX
Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats unveil new single “David and Goliath”. The song is the second offering from their highly-anticipated fourth studio album South of Here, set for release June 28, 2024, via Stax.
On “David and Goliath,” Rateliff is magnetic over marching keys, electric guitar and organ from The Night Sweats. He croons, “I want to be different now, a square peg feeling round,” reaching across damaged connections with unflinching honesty. Emotional and anthemic, the track is another direct look into Rateliff’s internal dialogue.
Rock At Night Says: The single “David and Goliath” expresses everything we feel in day-to-day life in this confusing, anxious society. It’s like being on a treadmill with pockets of sunshine (“the sun can’t shine for me every day”) and the need to conform to fit in (“I’m a square peg feeling round) and often fighting depression (“it tells me I’m on a run, then I’m back in the shadows, Hon). The lyrics sound questioning, honest, and even dark against a jaunty beat and optimistic tune. Think ELO’s “Mr. Blue Sky.” This is the most honest song we’ve heard in awhile. We are obsessed!

Lyrics
“David and Goliath” is written by Nathaniel Rateliff.
Can I get out of my head
I don’t know
Somebody let me go if I’m falling now
Every time I knew and ran
Set me on my feet as someone else
These negative thoughts feel crazy
Well why should I even care
I want to be different now
I’m a square peg feeling round
Turn me around and then
Send me home
Baby I don’t even know
I don’t ….. and it’s fucking hell
And the old me is saying
Another round to kill
Never time to heal
That’s how your story goes I want it my way
Closing my eyes baby I’ll find a way out
The reckoning is wrecking me
And nothing I’ve found
Can keep me from spinning out
It tells me I’m on a run
Then I’m back in the shadows, Hon
The sun can’t shine for me every day
I’m out on the road again and all of the older heads keep calling me
They say try to be gracious
