Review: Eric Anders and Mark O’Bitz – Contrapasso EP – Release date: April 1, 2024
When artists collaborate for more than 20 years, a certain synergy is built between them that they are able to guess what note or lyric the other partner in the project will come up with next, without knowing that expressly in advance.
That synergy then is able to come up with some excellent music, even if the artists have done their recording deep into the night.
That is exactly the feeling you get from ‘Contrapasso,’ the new EP collaboration between singer songwriters Eric Anders and Mark O’Bitz. Yes, Anders and O’Bitz have been honing their brand of folky Americana for some 20 years on, and they have always been able to come up with some layered, polished songs, often in different musical styles.
Here, with the help of musician and producer Mike Butler, the duo seems to have returned to basics of folk rock, but they add to the four songs here a deeper musical and lyrical edge that shows all their musical knowledge and experience. Late night stuff, for sure.
