Review: RxGhost’s album – Scaffolding – Release date August 8, 2024
If you are not sure what a combination of shoegaze and(loud) dangerpop sounds like, you don’t have to go much further that the sound of Kansas City quintet RxGhost, as presented on their latest album ‘Scaffolding.’ Leader Josh Thomas (known to some from his previous projects High Diving Ponies and Spidermums) has great support here from drummer Justin Brooks and guitarist James Capps – alongside bassist Chris Smead and multi-instrumentalist Jeremiah James.
Thomas himself describes the sound of RxGhost as “weirdo shoegaze music” and by that he probably has in mind the brash, loud and driving guitars supported by a metronomic rhythm section and some equally passionate vocals by Thomas. The songwriting throws in everything from ‘weird’ (and not so weird) shoegaze, emo, post-punk and what not else that can express a gamut of emotions RxGhost exhibit here.
And while ‘Scaffolding’ might be the band’s debut album, it exhibits not only a hefty dose of emotion and exuberance, but also solid songwriting and playing that all the fans of any of the above genres should take a note of.
