Review: Brian Ray – My Town – Release date – August 2, 2024
When that ‘classic’ power pop guitar and multi-tracked vocals kick in on ‘ When The World Was Round,’ the opening track on Brian May’s new album ‘My Town,’ you immediately realize that you are in company of a seasoned and sophisticated artist that definitely knows his chops and even more so, the sound he wants to come up with.
After all Ray played with true legends like Paul McCartney and Etta James, and the album is released on Wicked Cool Records, a label run by no less a legend that is Stevie van Zandt, who also a hand in co-writing some of the songs here. Add to that that Ray was lent a hand here by yet another legend – Smokey Robinson, who is a guest vocalist on ‘One Heartbeat,’ Michael Des Barres who does the same on ‘Spell Breaker,” as well as there are contributions from Gia Ciambotti and Brian’s Paul McCartney bandmate, Abe Laboriel Jr., on drums, as well as Scott Shriner (Weezer) and Davey Farragher (Elvis Costello) on bass and backing vocals.
Looking at Ray’s own experience and some nifty songwriting here, as well as the array of famous and well-known contributors you just might get the idea what to expect from Ray here. Yet, even better, taking a listen to one of the better power pop albums released this year will do the trick too.
