Review: Lara Taubman – The Gospel of Getting Free – Release date, June 21, 2024

There is a certain assured quality that was tied with the prime, seventies era of  West Coast singer-songwriters – excellent songwriting, strong lyrics and detailed arrangements and production that rounded the picture, putting the vocals at the forefront to lead the way.

Since then, things with singer songwriters have gone in all directions, with not that many of them hitting that ‘sweet spot’ described above.

Well, Lara Taubman might not be living on the West Coast but in New York, but her third album The Gospel of Getting Free seems to have hit that singer-songwriter sweet spot sound. Her songs here give equal attention to both required parts – the music and lyrics, putting personal experiences in a context that more than one listener can relate to, all enwrapped in excellent musical backing and production with Taubman’s specific voice at the forefront.

The album harks back to the height of singer-songwriter era, with enough modern elements to keep it rooted in current times.
