Review: Cast of Thousands – Third Wall – Release date: October 10, 2024
Austin, Texas 5-piece like their take on pop/rock, particularly power pop to work in some well-detailed routes, that start far back in the sixties with The Kinks, go through power pop progenitors Big Star, and reach to more modern purveyors of that sound like Teenage Fanclub and Guided By Voices.
On surface, that sounds quite easy, doesn’t it? Yet, far from being easy, coming up with a melodic sound that works is quite a complicated thing, and even though Cast of Thousands, assembled by songwriter Max Vandever have been working together only since 2022, they seem to have a right touch, right moves and an excellent sound on their latest album ‘Third House.’
Seemingly simple things are usually the hardest to do right, as they are not that simple to construct, and that ‘simple’ here is a clear, crisp, guitar-led sound that is based on great melodies and impeccable songwriting, that disarms you instantly.
