Review: Abstract Crimewave’s album  The Longest NightRelease date: October 4, 2024

If you encounter two albums by a band that went under the name of Smile, and it is not the project of Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and his friends, then you have run into a Swedish duo that went under that name, before Björn Yttling and Joakim Åhlund changed their name to Abstract Crimewave.

Maybe that change came by chance, maybe they did not want to get confused with the other guys that already made a big name for themselves, and maybe those two albums were good enough, but ‘The Longest Night, their third under their new name should surely find its place on your listening list.

And it is not just because the duo has a strong collaboration list here that includes Swedish big names in Lykke Li and Dungen, as well as now legendary Pretenders leader Chrissie Hynde, but because the duo here came up with a nifty set of eight indie pop rock songs that have touches of electro-pop throughout.

The quality of duo’s songwriting should be no surprise, as Yttling is of Peter Bjorn and John fame, and Åhlund who is a founding member of the Teddybears. They have also a rich history as musicians, songwriters and producers and have collectively worked with Charli XCX, Robyn, Neko Case, Franz Ferdinand, Giorgio Moroder, Neneh Cherry, Primal Scream and more.

No wonder that this rich, melodic album sticks to your ears like glue.
