Review: Joy Buzzer – Pleased To Meet You – Release date: October 25, 2024
If New York’s new power pop sensations Joy Buzzer give you just an indication with the title of their debut album, the cover makes sure of it – they are inspired by Paul Westerberg and The Replacements in their (latter day) power pop phase. And, oh, they make an excellent use of it.
Formed in 2021 by members of The Lord Calverts and the Doppel Gang, the band is led by songwriter/guitarist Jed Becker (also known for his work as composer and music director for the Nick Jr. series’ “Dora the Explorer” and “Go, Diego, Go!” among many others) with Kevin Lydon on lead vocals, KG Noble on guitar, Nick DeMatteo on bass and Mark Brotter on drums.
Of course, Joy Buzzer don’t simply copy their key inspiration here, as they seem to have an excellent taste in power pop, bringing in snippets of the likes of Fountains of Wayne, XTC, Squeeze, Todd Rundgren and Badfinger – all the greats of the genre, wrapping it all nicely in an exciting rock sound that has such an easy flow and some brilliant harmonies like on ‘You’d Be Surprised.’
An excellent debut, that gives a big promise.
