Review: JBNG – Run – Release date: November 1, 2024
Is grunge a thing of the past? Surely not, Foo Fighters are luckily still around and British Columbia outfit JBNG are also here to prove it with their sophomore album ‘Run.’
Comprising Jaben John Groome on vocals, Alejandro Yoshizawa on lead guitar, Jonathon Goldie on Rhythm, Tim Charman on bass and Matt Koopman on drums, JBNG keep the grunge flame burning by picking up pieces of the sound of all those great grunge bands of the nineties.
Groome, who also plays bass himself, decided to become a vocalist when he found that singing has a soothing effect for him personally, as something that has a calming effect, as he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder earlier in life – “I learned it helps, switching the nervous system out of fight or flight mode,” he admitted in a recent interview.
And it all seems to work a charm both for Groome, and JBNG’s sound, as his voice that sounds like a cross between Tom Waits and Nicke Cave gives the band’s sound that key ingredient that can attract a drove of listeners.
