Review: INNOVIBRATIONS’s single ‘Can I Take U Higher’ – Release date December 6, 2024
One of the things missing in the music world today is the existence of “the funk.” I’m not talking about R&B or soul, but the “get your ass on the dance floor” sound that was done well by so many in the past (think Earth, Wind & Fire, Bruno Mars, or Parliament/Funkadelic). A new congregation of musicians is looking to revive this sound, with “Can I Take U Higher?” offering up plenty of attitude and funk in their first effort.
The effort comes under the title INNOVIBRATIONS and is a creation of multihyphenate (guitars, keyboards, vocals) Greg Armstrong, who is trying to make this more than just a band. Armstrong envisions INNOVIBRATIONS as a warehouse of like-minded musicians and creators who will come together to “Create, Innovate, and Vibrate.” INNOVIBRATIONS will be a band, but it is also a record label, a studio, and a production company.
With the band iteration of INNOVIBRATIONS, Armstrong has united former members of Prince’s band, trumpeter Philip Lassiter and saxophonist Kenni Holmen, to play alongside Detroit vocalist Tosha Owens and drummer Petar Janjic, and create a simultaneously stimulating and enlightening groove that all listeners can get behind. According to Armstrong, the song and the band are all about one thing… positivity.
“I wanted to write a song that gave you the “Uptown Funk” vibe of happiness – uptempo, danceable, and fun, but most of all positivity,” Armstrong said. “Can I Take U Higher?” turned out better than I could have imagined.”
If your personal preferences run towards that “good time” vibe that a funky beat can provide, then you are going to enjoy INNOVIBRATIONS efforts with “Can I Take U Higher?” It does leave you wondering what else Armstrong and Company will conceive of in the future!
