Review: Hunter Benson – “Heaven’s Letter,” “Come And Gone,” “Seeking” – Release date: February 21, 2025

With roots and country rock, there is one trait the rockers that do it share with both roots and country – that is storytelling through song. And no matter how much rock or country you mix into your music, without good storytelling, things just might not work.

That is where Redondo Beach singer songwriter Hunter Benson and his latest three singles  “Heaven’s Letter,” “Come and Gone,” and “Seeking” come in. Benson cites some interesting cues for his music – Alice In Chains, Mark Lanegan on one hand, and Lynyrd Skynyrd and similar Southern Rock bands on the other.

“Home and Gone” started thing rolling, as if Lynyrd Skynyrd are back in full strength with some hard rocking guitar. “Seeking” that followed brings in threads of southern soul to spice things up, and the latest one “Heaven’s Letter” is one of those roots ballads that relies on great vocals (Bensons do remind of those from late great Mark Lanegan) and equally good storytelling, and Benson here delivers both of those.
