Review: Tristan Armstrong’s album “The Lonely Avenue” – Release date: March 7, 2025
It seems that power pop is up for yet another resurgence, and fans of this (sub) genre would certainly do themselves a favor if they pick up ‘The Lonely Avenue,’ the debut album by Toronto rocker Tristan Armstrong.
Through the nine tracks here, Armstrong draws his inspiration from all the right sources – Pete Townshend, Alex Chilton, Matthew Sweet, Redd Kross, you name it.
Yet, besides a good taste in your inspiration sources, you have to have a solid talent to transform them into viable, or shall we say, listenable songs that work. And it surely seems that Armstrong has honed his songwriting and performing capabilities quite well to be able to do exactly that, even though this is his debut album.
Since Armstrong previously co-founded roots rock band The Actual Goners, it is no surprise that there are very nice Americana touches throughout the album, but he surely prefers the strong power pop route for this solo outing, and he made no mistake doing that.
