REVIEW: The Franklin Electric’s 1st Australian tour

VENUE: Thrillroom, Ed Castle, Adelaide, January 23rd

IMG_7887Canada’s ALT-FOLK-POP band, The Franklin Electric, is currently touring Australia, supporting Australian band, Holy Holy, on their national tour. After tours in Canada and Europe, The Franklin Electric have ventured to the Land Down Under, beginning their tour at the Woodford Folk Festival. Lead singer, Jon, said one of the highlights of the tour so far, was climbing to the mountain top at the Woodford Folk Festival on New Year’s Day to watch the sunrise, with Tibetan monks chanting a welcome to 2016.Woodford Folk Festival

While in Australia, the band has also played in Brisbane, Sydney, rural NSW, Perth and Adelaide. They are currently in Melbourne, performing there on January 28th & 29th, and will end their tour back in Brisbane on January 30th. I caught them at a sideshow in Adelaide at the Edinburg Castle Hotel. The band showcased their album; This is how I let you down, including the title track from the album, and ‘Strongest Man Alive’ which features on YouTube with an impressive animated video.

Jon Matte, the front man of the band, supports his strong, yet also delicate vocals by playing mesmerizing keyboards, trumpet and occasionally, guitar. The band played a tight set, including a new song they wrote while here in Australia. So far they have one album to their name, This is how I let you down, but are currently working on new material.

Following this tour in Australia and a month of gigs back home, they will be heading to Germany, France, The Netherlands, Belgium and UK, in March and April. So look out for them if you can. Hopefully, they will return to Australia again one day.

BAND MEMBERS:
Jon Matte – Vocals, piano/keyboards, trumpet, guitar
Ken Pressé – Lead guitar
Martin Desrosby – Bass guitar
Kevin Warren – Drums
