Interview: Finsbury Pub, London-January 8, 2016
I discovered the British blues-rock band rumHoney in Spring 2015 while perusing the internet—and have been hooked ever since. Some of their songs sound like the rebirth of Bad Company and have a great classic rock feel—yet these guys were mere babes during the time these bands were at their height. I relished the fact great music could still exist in the Millennium with the same raw energy and feel of this long gone era.
Rock At Night had the pleasure of seeing the band live at Finsbury Pub, London and interviewing them shortly after the show. It was an acoustic set that evening (minus the bass and lead guitar) since the guitarist had a little accident cutting with a knife while being confined during Storm Frank. Yes, no doubt “cabin fever” will do that to you! Nevertheless, the band, which consisted of Sky Wood (vocals), Jaime Black (guitar), and Niol Sweeney (drums), still put on soulful blues renditions of their normally “electrified” material.
During the interview, rumHoney discussed the story behind their name, American blues versus Brit blues-rock, their bonding after a near death experience on an Alpine road, touring in Italy, the multi-cultural backgrounds of the band members, their love of Southern blues rock—Black Crowes, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and now Blackberry Smoke and Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi, Elvis’ birthday and soul traveling, and much more! There is plenty of comedy in the interview as the guys play off each other so you do not want to miss this one!
Some interesting thoughts emerged during the interview: some white man’s blues are “cheap on emotion” since they are missing the soul and pain; after the near death experience (car crash)- we have “Lynyrd Skynyrd in our biographies”; and that it’s hard for people to write blues when they are suffering with their “iPads”.
Members: Sky Wood, Jaime Blake, Noël Martin, Dominic Giannetta, Niol Sweeney; Genre: rock/soul; Home Town: London
