By Chris Patmore, Rock At Night London Correspondent
Rock At Night had the pleasure of interviewing punk-garage-rock duo The Dollyrots (Kelly and Luis) during their stop at The Roundhouse. The band which hails from Florida by way of L.A., California has been touring in the UK with their tot River in tow since the band is really a “family affair” now. During the interview, Kelly and Luis described how parenthood has “made us be more responsible” and how now they use social media to reach out to fans more than when they started the band in 2000/2001. They noted that music today is more DIY and they have held three crowd-funding campaigns to raise money for each music project. The Dollyrots recently released their EP Mama’s Gonna’ Knock You Out on January 29th (read RAN’s review here). Their CD/DVD entitled Family Vacation: Live in the USA will be released on March 29th.
During the interview, The Dollyrots discussed coming from a small town in Florida and moving to L.A.; being parents and working musicians; the new DIY funding of today’s music; the support of the arts and culture by countries like Canada, Norway, and Sweden; their genre of music which is “1950s rock meets late-70s Brit punk”; doing a cover of “Brand New Key”; and breaking a guitar while on tour.
