Tinariwen is a Grammar Award-winning group of Tuareg musicians from the Sahara Desert region of northern Mali. The band was formed in the early 80’s in a Lybian military camp for freedom fighters of the nomadic desert tribes suppressed by Mali. In 1996 the conflict ends and Tinariwen concentrates on making music. They play a mixture of traditional Tuareg music and blues and rock. The lyrics are in Tamasheq and French, and still political engaged. Since 2001 Tinariwen had an international breakthrough via European festivals and the band is touring all over the world. RAN captured the heat of Tinariwen desert blues at the Dutch outdoor festival Welcome to the Village in Leeuwarden.
