Warhaus is the artistic alter ego and solo recording project of Maarten Devoldere, who fronts the successful Belgian rock band Balthazar, along with Jinte Deprez. In September 2016 Warhaus released the debut album We Fucked A Flame Into Being. The title is a direct quote from Lady Chatterley’s Lover by DH Lawrence, a fitting title for an album where every song celebrates the inscrutability of encounters and pays tribute to the decadence and intensity that life can offer. Warhouse sounds dark and sober, could be inspired by Leonard Cohen, Serge Gainsbourg and live also by the solo albums of Rowland Howard.
Maarten Devoldere has kept his Warhaus persona well under the radar till the release, but press and public are very enthusiastic about the band. Warhaus didn’t perform very often, but maybe that will change if Balthazar takes a break next year to work on a new album.
RAN caught Warhaus at the festival Explore the North last weekend in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands.
