Nineteen eighties progressive/glam metal band, Winger, descended on the Wolf Den Saturday night. Performing hits from their two platinum albums, “Winger” and “In the Heart of the Young” , as well as popular singles “Seventeen”, “Miles Away” and “Headed for a Heartbreak”.
Frontman Kip Winger’s vocals were silk all night, while original band members Reb Beach, and Rod Morganstein ,were joined by guitarist/vocalist Donnie Wayne Smith.
The smoking guitar trio of Kip, Reb, and Donnie were punctuated by Reb’s scorching solo. Reb is also lead guitar for Whitesnake,
Drummer Rod Morganstein, a nominee for Modern Drummers Hall Of Fame, and Professor of Percussion at Berklee College in Boston, Mass played with a unique dynamic style, weaving his way effortlessly through “ So Long China”, “Stone Cold Killer”, and “Rat Race”, leading into a raucous solo of his own.
The faithful audience were well educated on “Winger” music and history, many knew even the deeper cuts “Down Incognito, and “Cant Get Enuff“
It seemed everyone had a Kip Winger story to share, many recommending his solo work and side projects that include the 2016 “ Winger: Conversations with Nijinsky” the Kip recorded with the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra.
The Nashville (Kip’s hometown) Symphony Orchestra will perform the much‐lauded Conversations with Nijinsky this September. After some thirty years, Winger has stood the test of time and holds their own against any of their contemporaries. As Kip says, they have lasted because “We respect each other, and are fans of each other’s musicianship”
For fans of this genre, Winger is a must see event!
