Rock At Night was excited to see Boy George and Culture club at Yuengling Center (fka Sundome), Tampa, Florida on Saturday, June 30th. When I think back to the 1980s, Boy George with his flamboyant fashion statements and 60s R&B sound captured the entire essence of the decade. Singles from the albums Kissing to Be Clever and Colour By Numbers saturated the air waves and MTV, creating not only an air of fresh, danceable music, but also helping to bring LGBTQ acceptance to mainstream America. I remember people gasping the first time they viewed videos of androgynous Boy George wearing a long robe, heavy eye make-up, lipstick, dreads, and a large black hat. Back in the day, Culture Club bridged the gap between pop, gospel, and R&B, and even my die-hard “metal head” friends admitted they “secretly” loved Culture Club. Culture Club’s music always brought people together!
At the Yuengling Center last night in Tampa, Culture Club emerged on stage with a full band, which included a slew of outstanding back-up singers, rounding out the Culture Club sound. The audience was treated to palate of greatest hits, including “Miss You Blind,” “I’ll Tumble 4,” and “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me,” and “Time (Clock of the Heart)”. The band performed newer songs like “The Truth is a Runaway Train”, “Different Man”, and “Human Zoo” from the unreleased album Tribes as well as paying homage to icons we lost like David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” and Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love.”
Everybody who attended the concert last night went away smiling and feeling very satisfied as music from their youth (the crowd was mostly Gen X’ers) was brought to life—and freshened up, with a preview of soon-to-be-released numbers. It is great to see Culture Club on the road, and it surely is a concert you do not want to miss!
