By Rick Slagter, Rock At Night Groningen, The Netherlands
Venue: TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht, The Netherlands–February 16, 2019
With Trump in mind, Brad Hammonds (guitarist/arranger) thought it was time to stand up against the machine and he brought a 10 piece brass experience to the Brooklyn Bowl in December 2017. The setlist included songs with a political edge of Rage Against The Machine, Living Color, Led Zeppelin and more. That was the birth of Brass Against, which nowadays, consists of a rotating selection drawn from a pool of approximately 23 musicians. The band independently released a a self-titled album in 2018.
During the tour, the band is performing songs from their album Brass Against. But be aware, Brass Against is not a cover band, but a force to behold. They have created their own renditions of song tracks to “resonate with people’s emotions and encourage action”.
You can describe the sound of the band as ‘power brass’, on stage not least by the voice of Maya Azucena, who is performing the lead vocals during the Resistance Tour in Europe at this moment. Rock At Night (RAN) attended the sold-out concert at the TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht, The Netherlands. The band almost blew the roof off the venue with a real ‘kick brass show’. Maybe it will have its effect on the Dutch Provincial Council Elections in March this year? Let’s hope so!
